March 9, 2011 Truman and the Fair Deal o Domestic policy o Federal government have responsibility o Fair Deal: social and economic goals Housing assistance(basic housing for everyone) Higher minimum wage More unemployment compensation Nationa lcommitment to maintain full employment (make sure every worker in America has a job) o Liberal program ran into opposition Midterm election: Republican won Congress Democratic president +Republican Congress=nothing gets done New Republican congress cut spending and cut taxes Congress struck out at democratic policies Strikes following war o Cost of living increase but no more income Strikes start Response to strikes= congress passes Taft-Hartley Act 1947 DIRECT CHALLENGE TO PROVISIONS OF 1935 WAGNER ACT(NLRA) Outlaw closed shop( all workers are forced to join Union) Restrict political power of Unions by prohibiting use of Union dues for political reasons Truman issue veto=keep vote democratic o Congress override and make law of land
