Bobby Krivitsky Michael Ebner History 112 Primary Source Assignment Part I) The reason that Abbe Sieyes argues that the nation is made up of the Third Estate alone is due to the fact that in Sieyes mind particular labors and public functions are necessary for the subsistence and prosperity of a nation. Sieyes then divides those labors into four classes; one of those classes is the soil and water, which furnish the primary materials for the satisfaction of human needs. Then there is the handiwork, which adds a secondary value to the materials being purchased and consumed, which in turn improves their value as raw materials by a considerable amount. There is also the multitude of intermediary agents who in between the production and consumption and the various stages of production prove to be just as useful to the producers as to the consumers. These useful and important people are the merchants, and they make up the third class. The fourth division of labor consists of a group of special works and services that are directly useful or pleasing to the person. The fourth class embraces everything from the
