Bobby Krivitsky Dan Golden History 210 October 4, 2011 Pericles’ v Melian Dialogues Pericles was a prominent Athenian politician, who at the end of the first year of the Peloponnesian War delivered an infamous funeral orientation. In his orientation, Pericles chooses to praise those who died during the Peloponnesian War by glorifying the city for which they died. In order to do so, Pericles discusses the road which Athens took in order to reach their current level of success and the form of government they used to achieve the success that they have garnered. However, the Melian account of the confrontation that took place between the small neutral island of Melos and Athens depicts the Athenians in a much different light. The Melian Dialogues found in Thucydides’ History of the Peloponnesian War, discusses the Athenians attempt to force the small isle of Melos to surrender to the much mightier Athens. The ultimatum that is given by the Athenians is that Melos shall either surrender or be destroyed. While the
