Unformatted text preview: AOSC Lesson 11 Coriolis Effect Coriolis Force When the ball leaves the hand of the thrower it has no forces acting on it and travels in a straight line to the other observer. When the platform is rotating the ball follows exactly the same path. The catcher sees the ball move away from him as it travels across the platform. From his point of view there must be a force acting on the ball. This apparent force is known as the Coriolis Force . Fig. 6-10, p. 167 Coriolis Force Always acts at right angles to the direction of motion. In the Northern hemisphere acts to the right of the velocity, in the Southern hemisphere acts to the left of the velocity. Is proportional to the magnitude of the velocity Is a function of the latitude Zero at the equator, maximum at the poles.
