January 30, 2012 SOC 265 Lecture #2 Dr. Glen Muschert Media and Violence Control: Communication in School Shootings I really enjoyed Dr. Muschert’s speech regarding school shootings and how the media communicates the shooters’ messages to the public. It was very interesting to hear a different opinion of what the shooters may be thinking. In general, contemporary society is much more concerned with “risk” than ever before. Although not much has drastically changed when it comes to youth and violence, we are more sensitive to it nowadays. During the lecture, we learned that school shootings developed as a problem in the late 1990s/early 2000s. We started to have a general exposure to violence when students perform these “rampage attacks” without a specific “target.” Sometimes there are targets, but many of the school shootings we hear about are at random. Because of this, our society generates even more fear and anxiety.
