Tim O’Brien FSW 281- B Observation 4 9/30/10 The Baby’s Appearance What comes to mind when we think of a baby boy? A baby girl? In my mind, I picture very different thing. I will ask some of my friends what comes to their mind, in hopes to confirm some of the empirical findings that are present in our textbook. Konrad Lorenz studied aspects of ethology, and related them to the relationships between mothers and their children. Lorenz used the term “babyness,” to describe how adults view their children. According to Lorenz, a “cute” baby seems to appeal to adults, and more significantly, to evoke care giving behaviors in them. Appearance of the baby may also be an explanation of rejection, according to the text. Parents may interact less lovingly with infants they consider unattractive than white those they consider attractive. I will look into how people change the appearance of their children to make them “cute” or more appealing to love.
