Tim O’Brien FSW 281  Observation 1 September 2, 2010 Abusive Substances during Pregnancy Before I sat down with a group of friends to discuss the issues of alcohol and smoke  during pregnancy, I had to do a bit of research on the matter myself.  What I learned in a matter  of 5 minutes, which I will discuss later in my study, made we wonder why a mother would ever  expose their child to these risks.  Of course, everyone knows that smoking and drinking is “bad”  during the prenatal period, but not many really know the extent of the side effects and  implications involved.  If women and their families are educated and aware of the damage they  are doing to their child's development during its prenatal period, I believe they would  dramatically lessen the use of alcohol and cigarettes.  I would take my theory to test when I sat  down with two of my friends, Anna and Katie.  Anna casually smokes cigarettes, and both Anna  and Katie consume alcohol on a weekly basis. To begin, I told the girls that I would be questioning them about their knowledge and  beliefs on the matter of prenatal care.  Both Anna and Katie told me that child birth wasn't in the
