MEMO To: President of Molded Plastics, Inc. From: Tim O’Brien, Quality Assurance Manager Date: February 3, 2011 Re: BlueFlame Quality Complaint BlueFlame, the maker of game consoles, has threatened to drop MPI as one of their main suppliers. They have alleged that the MPI parts are substandard and often crack when very little force is applied to them. In response, I have analyzed our two polymer suppliers—ACE and US. Concerns for MPI : Losing BlueFlame as a client Damaged reputation in the industry Future profitability downfall The main concern of BlueFlame was that our plastic part, in particular part #1A395, was not durable enough for their game consoles. After scanning the production process, I decided to analyze the quality of our own suppliers, ACE polymers and US polymers. I took 28 random samples of part #1A395, with a sample size of 3 polymers. I created an x-bar and range chart for both of the suppliers, then analyzed the data. I quickly found that we had a problem with our ACE supplier. While looking at the x-bar chart, I found that of the 17 sample means, 5 of them
