Geriatric Depression Prevalence Prevalence of geriatric MDD:1-2% in population MDD is less common than in nonelderly Estimates suggest up to 20% of elderly people  experience major depressive disorder (MDD) (or minor  depression) at some point  MDD is more common in women than men MDD and minor depression have increased healthcare  costs, disability, and low QoL

Characteristics of Geriatric Depression Bipolar depression is less common in the elderly  than in the nonelderly population Same diagnostic criteria as for MDD in the elderly  as for in nonelderly Guilt is less prevalent than in younger Memory complaints are more common Diminished energy is common Insomnia is common Suicide increases for men as they age Elderly patients may be less likely to report  symptoms than younger patients would
