Heating a Solution without a Loss of Solvent (Reflux): Heat is often applied to solutions in the organic chemistry lab in order to accelerate/catalyze a chemical reaction or a unit operation (physical separation). When heating a mixture to the boiling point of its solvent, however, volume loss occurs steadily if precautions are not taken to combat it. Using a reflux apparatus is the most efficient means of preventing solvent loss during the course of an experiment. Solvent vapors are caught, cooled and returned to the original mixture using a relatively simple combination of glassware. The assembly of a typical reflux apparatus is described below: Glassware/Equipment Checklist: Heating Mantle: This is the heat source for the reflux apparatus. Make sure that you choose a mantle of appropriate size so that heating will be uniformly distributed around the flask during the course of the experiment. It should be a snug fit.
