Presentation: The Fact of a Doorframe by: Adrienne Rich A. Unique Wardlaw 12/2/10 Eng 289 Adrienne Rich is a poet from Baltimore, Maryland. Born on May 16 th in 1929, Rich started writing poetry during her senior year at Radcliffe College. Soon after Rich’s poetry started being published, her poems were selected for a Yale Younger Poet award. Adrienne is mostly known as a key figure in feminist poetry, her frank discussions of lesbian sexuality contributed to open talk of homosexuals. For Rich, poetry had become a means of changing people’s ideas and attitudes about themselves. In 1953, two years after graduation, Adrienne Rich married Alfred Haskell Conrad who was an Economic professor at Harvard College. Even though Rich was an undergrad, Conrad was the only one that she could see herself with. Rich and Conrad settled in Cambridge, Massachusetts and had three sons. Becoming a freshly new mother, Rich was in fear of losing her womanhood and poetic ways. Within this era in her life she published an essay that displayed her anger, fatigue and frustration called “When we dead awaken: writing as revision”.
