In my experience Bales socioemotional and task theory as well as Gersic’s Punctuated Equilibrium Model articulate paradigms of how individual and group goals can play out. More often than not socio emotional and task issues particularly a redundancy in a desired role amongst group members was usually the genesis of the individual versus the group goal conflict. There have been many groups where my interest and theirs have aligned none more so particularly than my State Champion Highs School wrestling team. I realize the overuse of the sports metaphor in other disciplines however the single mindedness of the particular group is something that my mind can only compare with the military. Each member of this group’s role was defined in relation to the other members, meaning the goal of each individual was to push the person next to them to their physical and mental capacity.
