Lab Quiz 3 Lab 7: Circulatory System —transportation system of the body, carrying nutrients, oxygen, liquid and gaseous waste products, hormones, and other materials to and from every cell. Blood —the connective tissue that contains nutrients, oxygen, liquid and gaseous waste products, hormones, and other materials. Blood is pumped through the blood vessels by the heart—muscular, chambered organ Veins— carry blood from all body parts back to the heart Arteries —carry it away from the heart to the body’s parts Capillaries— small-diameter vessels that reach to every part of the body in capillary beds , where they also connect the arteries and veins Heart: External View Ventricles —large; eject blood from the heart by way of the arteries; located at the bottom of the heart Ventral Coronary Artery —supplies the heart with blood and runs roughly between the two ventricles Pulmonary trunk —large trunk crossing between the left and right atria. At the base of the pulmonary arteries Atria —noticeably smaller than the ventricles; the chambers that receive blood from the body by way of the veins. They look like small flaps, and the unattached part of each is called an auricle Posterior and Anterior Vena Cava —large veins that empty blood collected from the body into the right atrium Pulmonary Veins —empty into the left atrium from the lungs Aorta— carries blood from the left ventricle Pulmonary trunk arises from the right ventricle and divides to form the right and left pulmonary arteries, which go to each lung Heart: Internal View Four chambers— Two thin-walled atria Two thick, muscular-walled ventricles Between the atria and ventricles are the atrio-ventricular valves, small flaps or cusps of tissue connected at their free edges to fine tendons, the chordae tendineae— attached to the walls of the heart by columns of muscles, papillary muscles

There are two cusps on the left side, thus the valve on that side is termed a bicuspid valve Tricuspid valve is on the right side and has three cusps Pulmonary circuit—to and from the lungs Systemic circuit—to and from the body Fetal Circulation: There is an opening between the two atria, the foramen ovale ; it allows some of the blood to bypass the fetal lungs and flow directly to the aorta via the left atrium and left ventricle The pattern of blood flow in the circulation of a fetal mammal differs from that of an adult mammal. The reason is that the fetal lungs are not the source of oxygen for the fetus.
