INTRODUCTION TO COMBUSTUION ESSAY 1 Combustion is the process by which chemical energy is transformed into thermal energy. The applications and devices where combustion occurs span the entire spectrum of human activity. Some of the main applications are propulsion (automobiles, airplanes, ships, etc.), food processing, materials processing, and space heating. Human metabolism is also a form of combustion. Combustion is generally regarded as a chemical reaction between a hydrocarbon (a chemical compound made up of hydrogen and carbon) and oxygen. The analysis of combustion is an extension of thermodynamics. Therefore, it is worthwhile to briefly review thermodynamic principles. Thermodynamic variables p Pressure (force per unit area). Pressure always acts perpendicular to a surface. Units: Pascal (Pa) = N/m 2 ; lb f /in 2 . One atmosphere = 1.01325*10 5 N/m 2 = 101,325 Pa = 14.7 lb f /in 2 .
