“Facing It” by Yusef Komunyakaa is a poem about an African American that was a part of the Vietnam War. He identifies himself in the first lines of the poem saying “My black faces fades, hiding inside the black granite” (pg., 590). I would characterize the tone of the poem as being emotional. Komunyakaa in sense tells us that he was there and witnessed many of the tragic events that claimed many of the lives that are present on the Vietnam War Memorial. The title of the poem fits perfectly, and is east to understand right from the start of reading. Many would have to read the poem twice to really understand the basis of the title “Facing It”, but for me it was immediate. Komunyakaa, starts of by illustrating the fact that he was an African American during the Vietnam War, then goes on to say that “I said I wouldn’t, dammit: No tears”(pg. 590). He has gone to visit the Vietnam Memorial where he has to face the emotions, that he once experienced as he watched many of his brothers in arms die, or be wounded beside him. It was as if as Komunyakaa explained one minute he was taken back to the actual war and then the next he was looking at the names this was apparent by his words “I turn this way-the stone lets me go. I turn that way-I’m inside” (pg., 590) I have been to D.C. and visited the Vietnam Memorial before and for me it was an emotional event even though I know no one on the wall, but to see the veterans that come there and remember their friends and family that lost their lives in this conflict is an emotional event.
