The skin is one of the most important organs in the body particularly because it is the barrier layer that protects the inside of the body from the elements that are present in the outside environment. Our body’s skin is responsible for protection, keeping the body at the right temperature and allowing for us to have the sense of touch. Without skin our muscles, bones and important vital organs would just be hanging out and exposed too many diseases. Although, the skin protects the inside of the body like any other part of the body it too can be affected by disease and illness that may attack from the inside; causing a reaction on the surface of the skin. There are many known skin diseases and have very different characteristics in which they affect the skin.This paper will provide insight to a few different types of skin diseases and how they affect the skin and treatments that may be provided to subdue or cure skin diseases. One type of skin disease can be characterized as a viral skin infection. Viral skin infections are caused by viruses that may lay dormant or be active in host cells. Without host cells a virus cannot live. One type of viral skin infection is Herpes; there are two types of herpes, herpes simplex 1 and herpes simplex 2. Herpes simplex 1 is more commonly cold sores or fever sores. Herpes simplex 1 or HSV-1 affects the skin with sores around the mouth, nose, genitals, buttocks, and can appear on almost any place on the skin.(AAD,2010) Many times people who come in contact or contract the virus will not have any signs that the virus is active. HSV-1 has an incubation period of 1-20 days in which the virus replicates itself within the host
