March 23, 2011 a.) carbohydrates 1. Monosaccharides 2. Disaccharides 3. Polysaccharides a. Cellulose Where do you find endosperm? In the seed of the plant. How do seeds get their energy when they want to grow? They get it from the endosperm. They need to move things and make things too. Stored energy is basically starch (primary energy storage molecule of plants). Starch is a polymer of glucose. What is your primary energy storage molecule? If you have extra glucose, you store it as glycogen (polymer made up out of glucose) both have globular shaped molecules, have slightly different bonds. You are able to digest it because you have an enzyme that allows you to hydrolyze these molecules. We don’t absorb polymers, you’re absorbing monomers. Cellulose: You find it in plants. In their cell walls. Polymer made up out of glucose. Fibrous molecule instead of globular molecule, and you can’t get energy out of cellulose. *2 years ago President said there was a lot of corn, and they wanted to generate ethanol out of the corn (using the endosperm to do this). Price of corn went up because we wanted to use it for ethanol. The rest of the corn plant is made up of cellulose, which is another source of glucose. We don’t have enzymes to digest cellulose. Cellulose is very important for your diet. Dietary fiber is important for helping material that is in your gut keep moving through your gut. It is important for 2 reasons: - Fiber comes in 2 forms. Cellulose is one of those types that is insoluble in water. - Other types of fiber that are soluble. Dietary fiber is a combination of both. You want to incorporate both of them in your diet because it keeps things moving in your gut. Large intestine reabsorbs the water that is in your gut and brings it back into your blood system. Moist feces are more easily moved inside. If you don’t have fiber (soluble or insoluble), it slows down rate in which food moves down your digestive system. Fecal material gets too over dried and you get constipated. Keeps movement of material through your gut. soluble material helps keep the fecal material malleable and soft. Article
