Nitrogen balance Positive = person consumes more N than is excreted – periods of growth, pregnancy or recovery from illness Negative = person is excreting more N than is taken in – body is losing protein – starvation or consuming very low energy diet, severe illness, infection, high fever, serious burns, illness, blood loss In balance = protein intake is sufficient to meet protein needs – non-pregnant healthy adults

How much protein should we eat? In general, protein intake is not a problem in the US. Most Americans meet or exceed the Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA) for protein. RDA: 0.8 g/kg body weight Recommended % from protein: 10-35% of total energy intake Proteins needs are higher for children, adolescents, pregnant/lactating women, physically active people and vegetarians.
