3 Running head: FST TASK 1      Schools and Society Task 1 Establishing effective communication with parents is always a challenge and has  become more so in an increasingly diverse society. In the presentation given by the  teacher, examples of his/her effort to reach out to parents are evident. A translator was  provided for non-English speaking parents. A written explanation of class content and  expectations was provided, presumably also in the appropriate translations. The teacher  offered several alternatives for parents to communicate with the school: email, school  web site, and after school hours once a week.  Parents who are non-English speakers or have limited English fluency will greatly  benefit from hearing and/or reading explanations in their own language. A written  explanation of course expectations can communicate to parents what is expected from  their student and how parents may be supportive. According to the article by Joyce Levy  Epstein, “Just about all families care about their children, want them to succeed, and are  eager to obtain better information from schools and communities so as to remain good  partners in their children’s education” (2001, p.407).  Because of challenges in various  home situations, providing several avenues to communicate should be very helpful.
