10/28/10 Minorities and Ethnicity Background: Medical situation right before revolution is bad o War causes bad infrastructure, can’t get basic medical care o Western medicine at the time: Peking Medical School – training western doctors “only drop in a bucket o Brain Drain o Inequality by wealth Lack of basic necessities o What to do with excrement? Waste? Lack of clean water o Peasants collect waste “night soil” and use as fertilizer Risk of disease spreading such as worms and E. Coli Before western introduction: o 1. Quacks, Daoists, Local Spiritual witchcraft o 2. Traditional Chinese Doctor (TCM) Qi – Natural balance of body, need to balance it Food – Has qualities of qi Take Pulse – Many different ones, shallow and deep ones, different natures Heal by prescribing herbs, manipulating body, bone-setting After 1949 o Embraced modernization o Motivation: Wanted competent methods, scientific medicine, yet remain nationalist o Looks for non-western forms of medicine
