Exercise 1 Analysis To be completed as a group and turned in at the beginning of your next laboratory period. Include your “Data & Results”, sketches, acquired digital images, etc. as directed by your laboratory instructor. Show your work for all calculations and/or print your MS Excel data sheets. Be sure to include proper units where necessary. Adhere to University’s Honor Code and course policies. Balance between brevity and completeness. (1) Three devices were used to measure a 60-mL volume? (a.) Which device used in Section 1.3 seems to be the most accurate for measuring a 60- mL volume? State some reasons why this device might be more accurate compared to the others. (b.) Why can’t one determine which device seems to be the most precise based on the data collected in Section 1.3? What would one need to do to determine this? State the calculation one could use and rationale to decide? (2) Determine each of the three statistics (mean, standard deviation, and PEM) for the 9- mL volumes of water delivered with the 10-mL graduated cylinder (Section 1.4) and the 10-mL graduated pipet (Section 1.5). (a.) Compare each of these three statistics obtained using your group data set with that obtained using the entire class data set . Discuss explicitly any differences between the two data sets and what might account for such differences by answering the following: Which data (group or class) has a mean closer to the target value? Which statistic indicates accuracy? Is the group data or the class data more accurate and why might this be so? Which statistic indicates precision? Is the group data or the class data more precise and why might this be so ? (b) Using the entire class data sets, compare each of the three statistics obtained for the 9- mL volumes of water delivered with the 10-mL graduated cylinder VERSUS the 10-mL graduated pipet . Discuss explicitly any differences between the two data sets and what might account for such differences by answering the following: Which device (cylinder or pipet) is more accurate and why might this be so? Which device (cylinder or pipet) is more precise and why might this be so?
