Jamie Davis Gingerbread Thematic Unit Run, run as fast as you can! You can't catch me, I'm the Gingerbread Man! --------- DAY 1: Language Arts: Before reading any stories, ask the children what they know about the classic story, "The Gingerbread Man". Take notes on the white board or flip pages. Read the classic version of The Gingerbread Man to the children Revisit the white board. Ask the children what they can add to the information now that they've read the story. After that, have the students think of and write eight words related to The Gingerbread Man story. Then, for each word, write a sentence containing the word. Sample words: bake, oven, run, fast, can, river, fox, eat. **Bake some Gingerbread cookies the night before, and let each student decorate his or her own at the end of the day. Creative Arts: Provide the children with the Gingerbread Man to complete of their own. Have them cut out a stencil of a gingerbread man and decorate him, like they did their cookie. Then put together a decorative string of construction paper gingerbread men and women to decorate the room, bulletin board, or class Christmas tree. DAY 2: Language Arts: Discuss with the class how classic stories are modernized each generation. (For example, stories are translated to film -- Disney's Snow White, Cinderella, etc. or classic characters are adopted by current authors.)
