Annual Zora Neal Hurston Festival
Jamie Boyd
I got the privilege of attending the Zora Neale Hurston festival for the first time this year.
I must say it was truly awesome to visit her home town. I had an immediate connection to this
town just from readying the novel. I go to go with a group of students from our class, which
allowed us to see different things and explore together.
We decided to attend the education day
of the festival.
Ill half to admit, I went thinking there were going to be a bunch of children
everywhere, but it wasn’t like that. When we first got there the first thing I smelled was the
amazing food! There was food everywhere.
They had a little bit of everything from BBQ, to
soul food, from fair food, to even vegetarian food; quite the variety for everyone’s taste.
After
walking through the food we checked out the Haitian art museum they had set up. The paintings
were amazingly beautiful and so vibrant in color. These painting were unlike any I had ever seen.
