Defining Abnormal Behavior ¾ Behavior must fit several criteria: z Statistically deviant z Culturally deviant z Evoke emotional distress z Dysfunctional (maladaptive) 5 Abnormal Behavior Normal Criterion Abnormal Common Statistically Deviant Rare Acceptable Culturally Deviant Unacceptable Low Emotional Distress High Adaptive Dysfunctional Maladaptive 6 Defining Abnormal Behavior ¾ Behavior must fit several criteria: z Statistically deviant z Culturally deviant z Evoke emotional distress z Dysfunctional (maladaptive) ¾ “Abnormal” not rigid dichotomous category z Best viewed as a continuum 7 Medical Abnormality ¾ View that abnormal behavior is symptomatic of underlying “ disease ” that can be “ cured ” with appropriate therapy z Draws an analogy between mental and physical illness ¾ A widely held view, but some question it z Causes of mental illness often unclear z Social, cultural context of symptoms is important, more so than for physical illness 8
