4 NEED FOR THOUGHTFUL  DATABASE DESIGN With a well-designed database: It is easy to enter and update information. Generally simple to create the queries needed to  report the information. A poorly designed database is: Difficult to maintain. Difficult to query. Difficult to modify.

5 RULES OF GOOD DATABASE DESIGN 1. Give each entity a primary key. 2. Eliminate calculated attributes. 3. Make sure each attribute relates to or  describes the primary key. 4. Eliminate repeating attributes. (A process called normalization – our goal: third normal  form 3NF). We can apply these rules in any order
