Kiara Luis PSC 240 The International System Film Reflection Paper #1 Paradise Now This film centers around the lives of Said and Khaled, who have been best friends since early childhood. In the beginning of the film, they are shown going through the motions of a typical banal day in the West Bank city of Nablus where they work dead-end jobs as mechanics, smoke hookah, and drink tea. Their lives are unspectacular and lack purpose and meaning. While working on cars, Said meets Suha, a beautiful woman who catches his attention and breaks the monotony of his everyday life. Paradise Now was a film exploring the lives of these two young Palestinians who deliberate, in words and actions, the effectiveness and morality of different means of resistance to Israel’s occupation of Palestinian lands. The words and deeds of the two main very accurately reflect many elements of the ongoing, real-life Palestinian debate about violence, non- violence and strategies to end occupation.
