Tax Return Filing  Requirements General Rule:  A tax return must be filed if gross  income exceeds certain levels, based on taxpayer’s  status Typically  Due 4-15  of the following taxable year 6 month extension  of time to file is available Will incur a  penalty for failure to pay  if tax is  owed Extension request should be accompanied by  check for balance of tax due

Filing Status Taxpayer are classified into 5 filing statuses 1. Single 2. Married, filing jointly 3. Surviving spouse (qualifying widow or widower) 4. Head of household 5. Married, filing separately Filing status impacts tax rate, standard  deduction, and other amounts
