Learning Disabilities Definition Federal Definition : a disorder in one or more of the basic psychological processes involved in understanding or in using language, spoken or written, that may manifest itself in imperfect ability to listen, think, speak, read, write, spell or do mathematical calculation, including conditions such as perceptual disabilities, brain injury, minimal brain dysfunction, dyslexia, and developmental aphasia. Specific learning disability does not include a learning problem that arises primarily as the result of visual, hearing or motor disabilities, of mental retardation or emotional disturbance, or of environmental, cultural, or economic disadvantage. NJCLD definition: general term that refers to heterogeneous group of disorders manifested by significant difficulties in the acquisition and use of listening, speaking, reading, writing, reasoning or mathematical abilities. These disorders are intrinsic to the individual, presumed to be due to central nervous system dysfunction, and may occur across the lifespan. Characteristics Cognitive Characteristics: attention, intelligence, perception, memory and thinking/processing. Academic Characteristics : reading, oral language, written language and mathematics. Social and Emotional Characteristics: Social perception and social competence, and motivation. Behavior Characteristics: excessive out of seat behavior, talk-outs, and physical and verbal aggression. Identification Formal and informal assessments are used to identify learning disabilities in students. These assessments are designed to create a picture of a student’s learning capacity, academic achievement in reading and mathematics, social and emotional skills, and behavior patterns.
