WA 10 World War II was a global conflict that created violent encounters between peoples and radically transformed the political shape of the world. Men, women and children all over the world became intimate with war as victims of civilian bombing campaigns, soldiers, war workers, slave laborers and as comfort women. The widespread bombing of civilian populations during World War II meant that there was no safe home front during the war. The rise of nationalism around the world lead to the start of the war, and before the end of the war almost every nation had participated in it. Roosevelt explained the war as a “new kind of war. It is warfare in terms of every continent, every island, every sea, every air lane.” Virtually every available material and human resource known to humanity had been used to fight aggressively in the war. During World War II it became common for nations to avoid declarations of war. Instead, they relied on surprise and swift conquests. This type of malicious attack led to much genocide around the world. The aggression and use of weaponry created a loss of remorse for human lives in the attempt to become the best nation (B/Z/S, Riley). Genocide means an act committed with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical, racial or religious group. These acts include the killing of members of a group, causing serious bodily or mental harm to members of the group, deliberately inflicting on the group conditions of life calculated to bring about its physical destruction in whole or in part, imposing measures intended to prevent births within the group, or forcibly transferring children of the group to another group.
