WA 12 The war in Yugoslavia started over the opinion of the Yugoslavia President, that Serbia should have complete reign over all the nation states in Yugoslavia. What it turned into was a bloody war that generated genocide among different religious groups. Although there was much nationalism among the citizens in the different nation states, it was not enough to hold Yugoslavia together as a whole. Although the war was only three years long, much shorter than some other wars, thousands of lives were taken while many remained wounded. It turned into be a battle of religion and race that only ended due to the help the United State and the United Nations. After World War One the new Yugoslavia rose out of the ashes of the Ottoman Empire (among others) which had been defeated and dissolved. Yugoslavia included several nation states such as Serbia, Montenegro, Macedonia, Slovenia, Croatia, and Bosnia. Most of these countries were divided by and mostly populated by a single religion. The people of both Croatia and Slovenia practiced Roman Catholicism and essentially spoke the same language; however, both were very culturally different (Module). Serbia was the exception to the same religion rule. The people of Serbia were mostly Eastern Orthodox Christian and spoke the same language as the Croatians and Slovenians, known as Serbo-Croatian. Serbia also had a large population of people that were Muslim and spoke Albanian, and a minority of Hungarians that were catholic but spoke a completely different language. The cultural heritage of Serbia was also very unique. It was a combination of the Byzantine Empire which they had been a part of and the Ottoman Empire which they had been a part of for six hundred years.
