Lee 1 Ray Lee Expository Writing 101 Terrill Assignment #2 Final Draft How Human Natural Tendencies Influenced The Citadel The Citadel has been regarded for many years as a public military college with many prides and traditions. However, the normal way of life at The Citadel and their traditions can only go for so many years before it gets tested. Both Susan Faludi, the author of the essay “The Naked Citadel”, and Malcolm Gladwell, the author of the essay “The Power of Context: Bernie Goetz and the Rise and Fall of New York City Crime”, agree that individual behavior can influence the bigger picture. Gladwell’s theories about the environment and human behaviors explain the changes and stagnation of The Citadel. The cause of the culture at The Citadel can be narrowed down to three points of Gladwell’s many theories of the environment – the Broken Windows theory which explains how the tradition grew, the way the people influencing The Citadel know how to control their environment which explains how the tradition stood firm, and the Tipping Point theory which explains what people at The Citadel would do if their tradition is on the line. The members of The Citadel have a widespread pride of their institution’s traditions, but their extreme acts of tradition would eventually hit a tipping point where their normal ways of life would be jeopardized. Gladwell’s theories explain how the growth and stableness of tradition at The Citadel influenced people at the institution to hinder the overall growth of the school. Gladwell’s Broken Windows theory is applicable to Faludi’s essay “The Naked Citadel” because it explains how the tradition of The Citadel took off and grew exponentially. The Broken Windows theory states, “If a window is broken and left unrepaired, people walking by will

Lee 2 conclude that no one cares and no one is in charge. Soon, more windows will be broken, and the sense of anarchy will spread from the building to the street on which it faces, sending a signal that anything goes” (Gladwell 237). When people see crimes happening and nothing is done to stop the crimes, they tend to think that it is all right for them to commit a crime as well since no one cares to stop the crimes. At The Citadel, it is no different. One tradition leads to another. One sort of hazing leads to another. The Broken Windows theory explains how one thing affected the bigger picture. That one thing is the mission of The Citadel. The cornerstone of The Citadel is to “[make] men” (Faludi 179). This encourages the freshmen regimen to be created, which is called the “fourth-class system” and “knobs.” The original intentions were good, it was to “strip each
