University of Ottawa School of Political Studies POL 2107B Introduction to Political and Social Thought Fall 2011 First Essay (20%) Choose one of the following topics: 1. Pericles’ Funeral Oration in Thucydides’ The Peloponnesian War praises Athenian democracy. Later, in the Melian Dialogue, Thucydides shows representatives of the Athenian government in wartime negotiations with another city. What political values does Pericles seem to endorse in the Funeral Oration? Are these values contradicted by the speech and actions of the Athenians in the Melian Dialogue? Do these two scenes suggest a different meaning when they are read together, than when they are read separately? Explain your answer. 2. The Apology is widely considered as a more or less accurate record of Socrates’ defense speech at his trial. Instead of playing on the sympathies of the jury, Socrates presents a number of controversial claims regarding the purpose of politics and the nature of justice.
