A Battle for Global Values Notes Jacob Schaaf The Roots of Extremism We must defeat their ideas to win the war We can only win by showing our values are stronger, better and more just than theirs The Koran is far ahead in its time in attitudes toward marriage, woman, and gov- ernance Political radicals became religious radicals, and vice versa They believed they must have extreme religious views so restore confidence and sta- bility in Islam 3,000 people were murdered on 9/11, 10,000 died in algeria In 30 or 40 countries there are terrorism ideas going on Some political strategies come deliberatively, sometimes by instinct A movement said that muslims had moved away from their proper faith and were be- ing taken over by the wester culture In the 1990’s the plan was to fight the islam There was a good chance that the Muslims would chose to reject fanaticism The Nature of the Struggle Not a clash between civilizations; clash about civilization
