Homework 4, EE507, 2008.

In class, we graphically described the half IF image problem. In this problem, you are
to mathematically describe the problem. Let the mixer be an ideal mixer followed by
a static nonlinearity with even order distortion. Assume the simplest form. Let the
input have two sinusoidal term at two different frequencies, one is the signal, the
other is the half IF image term. Assume you have an appropriate filter after the mixer.
Find the expression for the error term (the red).

In class we talked about multistage IF conversion and the filter challenges. One
example was 1800MHz –> 18MHz vs 1800MHz –> 450MHz –> 90MHz –> 18 MHz.
Elaborate on the pros and cons of each approach.

Use the same example as in problem 2 to illustrate the different levels of difficulties
involved in image reject filters in the two choices. We assume that we do not use any
image reject architectures, but rely only on the image reject filter to achieve better
than 50 dB image rejection ratio. For simplicity, let’s assume the image is on the high
