ENGL1050H Thomarius DaBomb Slaughterhouse-Five Paper 04/01/09 Enlightened Extraterrestrials: Living the Trafalmadorian Philosophy This world has three visible dimensions: length, width, and height. Humans cannot freely traverse the fourth dimension, time, unlike the Trafalmadorians, an alien species in Vonnegut's novel Slaughterhouse-Five . Their ability to traverse time gives them an unfathomable omniscience. To humans, this omniscience would cause a great temptation to change the future. However to the Trafalmadorians, “the moment is structured that way” and will always occur (Vonnegut 117). Instead of lamenting the future, they “spend eternity looking at pleasant moments” (Vonnegut 117). Although humans cannot freely traverse time, this philosophy can lead to an enlightened way of life. For example, during horrific times, one can vicariously live through one's memories to experience a happier moment. Taking this philosophy one step further, one's actions will forever live in the
