Ch6 Does God Exist? I. Can God's Existence Be Proved A) With Certainty 1. Held by Thomists and Greek philosophers 2. Probably not sufficient since it should've convinced everyone already 3. If he truly is transcendent, we shouldn't be able to completely conceive of Him and prove his existence beyond all doubt B) Rational arguments are worthless 1. Kierkegaard i. Only can learn through revelation ii. Dumb, belittles man iii. How did Plato discover God through the beauty and order of nature then? C) Can be demonstrated to support belief in Him 1. Some elements of experience lead people to belief in God i. Sense of contingency, moral experience, beauty and order of nature, and religous or mystical experiences – Ian Crombie ii. Cryptic Theism, Austin Farrer, everyone has these experiences and God is possibily a more suitable explanation for them than naturalism iii. Possibly better than past attempts at purely metaphysics (I mean, where do metaphysics come from anyways? We who have empirical experiences)
