Chapter 10 Seismologists: geologists who study earthquakes Seismicity: earthquake activity - seismicity can occur for several reasons 1. sudden formation of a new FAULT: fracture on which body of rocks slide past another 2. a sudden slip on a nexisting fault 3. a sudden change in the arrangement of atoms in comprising rocks 4. movement of magma in a volcano 5. explosion of a volcano 6. a giant landslide 7. a meteorite impact 8. underground nuclear bomb tests hypocenter: the place where an explosion occurs. Epicenter: the point on the surface of the earth directly above the hypocenter - normal faults form in response to stretching or extension of the crust, reverse or thrust faults develop in response to squeezing and shortening of the crust, and strike-slip faults form where one block of crust slides past another laterally - faults that don't intersect with the ground surface are called blind faults or hidden faults - a change in the shape of an object that disappears when stress is removed is called an
