October 11, 2010 ATTITUDES AND ATTITUDE CHANGE A-When Self-Serving Biases Become a Problem 1- 90% of managers believe themselves to be better than their peers a. The people who don’t get a ‘raise’ get angry and then perform worse, or start looking elsewhere for a job b. Has bad consequences in the business world c. Managers performance is a very subjective judgment 2- In marriages, women say they do 70% of the housework; Men say they do 45% a. Somebody is overestimating what they are doing: probably both b. When people feel they are doing more than their fair share, they get resentful and angry c. Causes conflict in marriages d. When groups succeed, members take a disproportionate share of credit; when they fail, members take less than proportionate share of blame. d.i. When responsibility is to be taken, not too many people step forward 3- High self esteem and the problem of “threatened Egotism” a. People do bad things because people don’t ‘like themselves’ …this, however is not true b. Is there a correlation between low self esteem and anti-social behavior? b.i. It is actually higher self esteem that is correlated with anti social behavior c. Violent criminals and bullies actually think more highly of themselves than most other people d. Idea that pathology can be traced back to low self esteem, is Not True. 4- Measuring people’s self-esteem based on a self-report esteem test a. Self esteem is one’s own subjective judgment of oneself b. Method of measuring self esteem: self report inventories c. Those who were more likely to administer higher levels of noise to their criticizers, were actually those with higher self esteem. d. When you operationalize a variable: take a aggression, and measure it some way 5- The better than average effect: a. 90% of American schools think they are doing better than average b. People are distorted 6- Inflated self esteem may lead to threatened egotism a. If my perception of myself matches the way that other people perceive me a.i. Congruency creates a problem equilibrium b. I’m not going to feel undervalued if others value me as much as I value myself c. The problem comes when people have very very high appraisals of themselves c.i. Others aren’t going to appraise them with the same degree of positivity c.ii. There is a more of a chance for conflict c.iii. Causes aggression: can be psychological, social, physiological d.
