Sociology 120 Lecture 19 15:30 Review Parenting styles Concerted cultivation Accomplishment of natural growth  Laruea Observed how parents interact with their kids and with their kids schools  Black middle class, black lower class and poor, white middle class, white lower class  and poor  Turns out that they are traced by socio-economic differences  Gives a window into the class difference across generations Accumulation of interactions leads to large scale differences  Fathers Fathers tend to relate differently  Active play Running around, playing games  Mothers are much more engaged in the everyday activities  Some believe that this is not fair because the fathers have all the fun and get the kid all  wild and crazy But it is the kids job to calm themselves down  Father’s influence often indirect Backing up mom Kids figure out that if one parent says no, they should go to the other one

Parents work together and the father helps the mother (Well, what does your mom say?) income Helps fathers to be respectful as his wife’s role as a mother Fathers matter, but may matter less than mothers Less time spent with child Doesn’t mean that fathers couldn’t matter more Nothing specific that only mothers can provide or that only fathers can provide Parenting and time spent with children are inflexed in today’s day Children in Poverty Dramatic decrease 1940s-1970 (higher than old age poverty)  ~45% => ~10% poverty plummeted  Gradual increase at lower levels over last decade 2004: 18%  But  much  higher relative poverty in US than other western countries! America measures poverty in a different way than the rest of the developed world In the eyes of European’s for American children, a lot more children are poor  Snapshot versus life-course perspective  Just because someone is poor today doesn’t mean that they will always be Enormous amount of families in and out of poverty (snapshot) How many kids are ever poor when they are growing up?
