Near universal emotional turmoil during crisis period, 1-2 years after divorce Depression self-esteem they think that it is their fault irritability the most natural environment that the child knows is breaking apart, they feel displaced behavioral problems take their anger out in the wrong places and on the wrong things Factors Loss of a parent (by divorce) Kids are used to have two adults in their family- loving, controlling, caring for Children whose parent died do not experience this difficulty Economic loss New economic circumstances can affect the child Diminished parenting Coercive cycles Parents go through problems and the kids sense that something is wrong so they get angry and then the parent yells at the kids Less man power Multiple transitions (new home, school, friends, parent) Transitions per se may create problems Divorce vs. Conflict Pre (and post) divorce marital conflict may harm children Divorce as a process Kids as parents pawns The parents lose their person so the parent needs someone new Recommended that people seek counseling Studies find that some post-divorce problems start pre- divorce Consequences of divorce depend on circumstances Psychological wellbeing of children whose parents ended a severely conflictive marriage...
