Gender & Women Studies Lecture 11 17:02 The fertile time of a woman is approximately  7-10 days  the egg will live for about 24 hours  sperm lives inside female body for about 4-5 days, possibly 6-7 days if sperm is present before ovulation, fertilization will be maximized  Can we predict ovulation? NO!!!!! We can only ESTIMATE ovulation! Counting 14 back from the first day of bleeding Doing this for a few months If a woman gets her period regularly on the 31 She gets it on the 17 Why Because we subtract 14 days from the first day of bleeding  Endometrial cycle Purpose Prepare a good environment to nourish and maintain the ovum if  fertilized 1. Menstrual phase Main event Menstruation Main hormone Low levels of estrogen and progesterone if no egg is fertilized The endometrium is thick and nourished with fluids and nutrients Top layers of the endometrium are shed and menstrual bleeding occurs
