A 13-Step Program to a Cleaner Draft 1. Check for run-on sentences, they look like this. (The previous sentence is a comma splice.) 2. Check for fragments. Like this. 3. Punctuation: if you think you are using punctuation incorrectly during parts of your papers, refer to pages 58 through 70 in A Pocket Style Manual. 4. Cut almost every intensifier such as very and quite. Cut almost all adverbs—words that end in -ly. The only adverbs you should keep are the ones that, once you’ve cut them, change the meaning of a sentence. 5. Identify expletive constructions, which are sentences that begin with There are…It is…This is… You will need to rewrite most of these sentences . 6. Identify sentences that rely on intransitive verbs. To be is an intransitive verb. (Is, was, are, were, etc.) Intransitive verbs cannot take a direct object. In other words intransitive verbs do

Watch out for subject-verb disagreements. 9. Watch out for pronoun disagreements and ambiguous references. 10. Make sure you are using apostrophes correctly. 11. Look at each paragraph separately. Identify sentences that begin with the same word. Re-write those sentences so that they do not begin the same way. 12. If you notice two or more short sentences in a row, consider combining these sentences. 13. If you notice a few medium length sentences or a few long sentences in a row, consider re-writing them so that you have a variety of short, medium, and long sentences....
