Short Answers - Radio homogeneity o At one time, radio was thought to be a threat to individualism o Afraid that it would make us all the same o Didn’t happen, radio has become unmassed: something for everyone o Our culture in general has become more individualistic than anyone has ever thought - Vox Populi o ‘Voice of the people’ o At the beginning, it was about the man in the street Showing respect for the opinions of the common man Slowly became a silly quiz show: common man becomes a picture of ridicule, foolishness, not to be trusted Temporary return of respect during WWII (becomes hero) After WWII was over, becomes about celebrity interviews o Moves from populism to consumerist, promotional show - Radio in the Depression o Germany Used radio to create ‘the volk’; creation of Aryan race Created a national community around plotting revenge o England Used radio to go back to its traditions and glory before WWI Created a national community around culture o United States Used radio for the Fireside chats to create a sense of family Created a national community around buying - Radio as feminine medium o During the Depression there was a creation of culture that we should buy, spend, and consume o Target audience of radio were housewives because men were either at work or looking for work o Housewife became the central point of consumerist society, raised to high level - Irregular sexuality o Housewife was the center of the home and therefore society o Anything that threatened this normalcy was considered dangerous o Any sexuality beyond the norm was dangerous So threatening because radio is intimate and is in the home
