8/23/11 Western Civ Barbaros - word that the Greek used to refer to people who didn’t speak Greek- barbarians. Europeans saw themselves as financially and racially superior. Italians looked at Germans and Scandinavians as barbarians. Many Europeans though that a monarchy form of government was preferred. Europe in 1500: Life in an Insignificant Backwater I. Europe c. 1500 A. Geography and economics 1. Europe in the world In 1500 Europe was not in its prime. It was a good place to go to catch slaves, and then they’d return to where the action was: wealth, entertainment. The Chinese were not interested in anything Europe had to offer, they had all the riches they needed. 1500 was a general point in time in which the Audubon’s are in control and the renaissance is going on in Italy. There are Spaniard’s going to the New World, etc. The Spaniards take back gold and silver from the New World in order to purchase Chinese goods. Europe before 1500: Geography, Politics, and Economics- Many people in France weren’t aware that they lived under the French king. People weren’t aware of their political boundaries. There were many more European states during this
