Religious beliefs of the Old Regime -Belief in the Authority of Scripture (in Protestant Countries) -Belief in the authority of the churches (especially in Catholic countries). Believed churches are place you go for salvation, prayer, and experience of God. Central to village life, and people have their whole lives set according to the calendar of the church. -Belief in miracles, freaks of nature, God’s intervention. They explained occurrences as miracles (ex: hail, disease, etc.) -Belief the world is as it is, and cannot fundamentally be improved Culture -Belief in precedence, privelage -Belief in legal inequalities as the right way to order the universe -Patriarchal beliefs: ‘fathers’ take care of ‘children’ -Culture is for aristocrats -Courts as patronage networks The Baroque (LOOK UP) The Witch Craze -Product of era of religious conflict and fear of others -Product also of era of plagues, unusual weather events, political upheaval -Era in which there is no specialized medicine
