Social Issue Temperance -Women’s Christian Temperance Union -Anti-Saloon League (1893) Settlement Houses -Jane Addams, Hull House 1889 (her money came from her father’s will) -Clean up tenement areas; provide services Anti-Prostitution crusades Public health Birth control Reform: Local (Municipal Reform): City Commissioners/City Managers (going to a city commissioner which only consisted 4-5 people had more accountability rather than 400-500 people)(Americans have problem in district voting) At-large voting Civil Service Examinations Zoning laws (one part would be meat-packing area, so not everywhere was like that area) New Professionals: city planners, public health officials, sanitation engineers (creating more people who are experts)(not just using political power, but elites do the things) Reform: State Regulate RRs, and women’s and children’s labor (individual states tried to clean up government and exert more power)(regulate railroads)
