(Problem 2.1 in [1]) Consider the low-speed flight of the Space Shuttle as it is nearing a landing. If the air pressure and temperature at the nose are p = 1 . 2 atm and T = 300 K, respectively, what are the density and specific volume? 2. A steel SCUBA cylinder has the following parameters: • Rated pressure: p = 3 , 100 psi (pounds per square inch). • Fill volume: v = 100 cubic feet. • Empty weight: W = 33 lbs. The tank is filled to its rated pressure at T = 20 ◦ C. What is the mass of the air inside the cylinder? A diver goes for a planned dive at 60 feet depth (the maximum limit after a PADI open-water certification). Suppose that the air in the tank would be sufficient for 90 minutes on land at sea level. How much faster does the diver use up the air at the planned depth? You may simplify your analysis to give an approximate answer, but clearly state the assumptions you used in your calculations. 3. Consider a flat plate as shown in Figure 1, with sides x = 3 m and y = 2 m .
