Why are we concerned? Takeoff performance: A tradeoff between runway length and weight . Shorter takeoff/landing distances (lighter weight) allow operational flexibility. Lots of short runways Not so many long ones… More weight (longer takeoff) means more fuel (range) and/or more payload (mission effectiveness). 2

Tricycle Gear Advantages: Rotation on takeoff and landing – higher lift at takeoff, but good visibility during groundroll. Easier transition between flight/ground operation. Stabilizing turning moment on landing. Disadvantages: Relatively heavy, due to sophisticated nose gear. More rolling friction (3 wheels in contact). Balance is more critical. 6

Tail Dragger Advantages: Less rolling friction: Only two wheels in contact Higher angle of attack during groundroll Simple construction: Reduced weight Disadvantages: Unstable on the ground. Poor visibility from the cockpit during taxi.
