Reflex Relatively simple motor response made without the involvement of large numbers of association neurons Monosynaptic reflex Cross-extensor reflex Cutaneous reflex
Background image of page 2
Monosynaptic Reflex Simplest reflex (requires only one synapse between the sensory and motor neurons) Also known as muscle stretch reflexes Knee-jerk reflex (Fig. 3.12) Extensors = quadriceps Flexors = hamstrings

Crossed-Extensor Reflex Sensory impulses travel longitudinally and/or transversely within the gray matter, stimulating other motor neurons May lead to contraction of other flexor muscles on the same side (ipsilateral ) and contraction of extensor muscles on the opposite side (contralateral ) Inhibits contraction of antagonistic muscles (ipsilateral extensors and contralateral flexors)

Crossed-Extensor Reflex • Ipsilateral side: Flexors (contracted) = hamstrings Extensors (inhibited) = quadriceps • Contralateral side: Flexors (inhibited) = hamstrings Extensors (contracted) = quadriceps
