Gas Exchange Gas exchange occurs in the alveoli of the lungs O 2 : alveolar air → blood CO 2 : blood → alveolar air Blood leaving the lungs is rich in O 2 and reduced in CO 2 . When the blood reaches the tissue capillaries, O 2 diffuses from the blood into the tissues where it can be used by the cells in aerobic respiration. CO 2 becomes a byproduct of AR which diffuses from the tissues into the blood.
